As a native of Youngstown, Ohio, I believe that former President Donald Trump may win the 2024 presidential election. Why do I say this? I was visiting relatives in Ohio when Trump was campaigning for the 2016 presidential election. Many white people wore red baseball caps with the slogan, Make America Great Again, hoping for jobs based on his promises.
Twenty-three years ago this month, jazz vocalist Steve Cromity was a Contract Compliance Manager in the Engineering Department with the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey on the 73rd floor of No. 1 World Trade Center.
CEMOTAP (Committee to Eliminate Media Offensive to African People) is waging war against “Netflix A Good Times Reboot.” Supposedly based on the original Good Times TV series, this animated version is nothing like the original. Moreover, it is insulting, demeaning and totally absurd – portraying negative and stereotypical images of Blacks.
Now that 2023 is recent history, looking back at one of the groundbreaking events was the opening of the Cultural Museum of African Art, Inc., The Eric Edwards Collection’s phenomenal museum opening in Bedford-Stuyvesant’s Restoration Corp. on November 18, 2023. This is the largest privately-owned and publicly-funded collection of African artifacts to ever go public.
During one sweltering summer day in Brooklyn, a group of musicians formed a circle in Prospect Park to continue a tradition that has been taking place on Sundays for 55 years.
At a space named Congo Square in honor of the antebellum site in New Orleans where former enslaved Africans gathered for cultural expression and entertainment, drummers began to beat on their African styled Congo drums.
Friends, supporters and family gathered to congratulate Israel “Izzy” Abanikanda, a former member of Brooklyn United Football who was recently drafted by the New York Jets.
“Everybody jumped for joy as Izzy’s name was called and people started to hug him,'' said Adam Howard Jr. who attended the draft celebration for Abanikanda on April 29 at Lincoln High School. The two have been best friends since age 10.
As Black History Month comes to an end, I must pay homage to an influential Black leader who recently passed away. That person is the late, Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts III of Abyssinia Baptist Church, which is my home church. He died on October 28. 2022 after losing his battle to cancer.
